Expert Neurological Care for Children in SE Houston

At Family Neurology and Neurodevelopmental Center in Pasadena, TX, we provide comprehensive neurological care for children from birth through adolescence. Our team includes Dr. Vanessa Mbanga, MD — a fellowship-trained epileptologist and pediatric neurologist — and Dr. Lisa Nassif Wright, MD — a board-certified adult and child neurologist with academic appointments at UTMB and Baylor College of Medicine.

Our Pasadena, TX clinic serves as a pediatric neurologist near Houston for families across SE Texas. We treat the full spectrum of pediatric neurological conditions, with particular expertise in childhood epilepsy and seizures. Dr. Mbanga is the only fellowship-trained epileptologist in private practice in SE Houston — and she sees children of all ages, from newborns through teenagers.

One of the most important things we offer: continuity of care across the lifespan. Because we treat both children and adults, your child will never need to switch to a different neurologist when they turn 18. The same team that treats your child’s epilepsy at age 5 will manage their care at age 25.

Unique to Family Neurology: We see patients from newborn to senior — all in the same private practice. Most pediatric neurology offices transfer patients to adult neurology at age 18. We don’t.

When Should My Child See a Neurologist?

Contact us or ask your child’s pediatrician for a referral if your child experiences any of the following:

Any seizure or suspected seizure

A first seizure always warrants neurological evaluation. Call us promptly.

Unexplained staring spells

Brief episodes of unresponsiveness may be absence seizures — easily diagnosed with an EEG.

Developmental delays or regression

Losing previously acquired skills — walking, talking — always needs neurological evaluation.

ADHD or behavioral concerns

Difficulty concentrating, hyperactivity, or impulsivity impacting school or relationships.

Chronic headaches

Frequent, severe, or worsening headaches in children that aren't responding to basic treatment.

Repetitive movements or tics

Eye blinking, throat clearing, repetitive movements that your child cannot control.

Questions from Parents

Pediatric Neurology FAQ

What does a pediatric neurologist treat?

A pediatric neurologist diagnoses and treats neurological conditions in children, including epilepsy and seizures, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, developmental delays, cerebral palsy, headaches, tic disorders, childhood stroke, and sleep disorders.

When should I take my child to a neurologist?

Take your child to a neurologist if they have had a seizure, are experiencing unexplained headaches, showing developmental delays or regression, have been diagnosed with ADHD or autism and need specialist evaluation, or have any other neurological concerns. Call our office at 713-589-7020 — our team will help you determine urgency.

Do you treat babies and newborns?

Yes. Family Neurology treats patients from birth through adulthood. Dr. Vanessa Mbanga has specific expertise in neonatal seizures — her research includes publications on seizures in newborns and she has presented this work at national neurology conferences.

Do I need a referral from my pediatrician?

It depends on your insurance plan. Many plans allow direct specialist access. Call us at 713-589-7020 and we will verify your insurance. If a referral is needed, we can coordinate with your child’s pediatrician. Pediatricians can also send referrals directly by fax to 713-999-9095. Physician referral information.

What happens at my child's first neurology appointment?

The first visit is typically 45–60 minutes. The physician takes a thorough developmental and medical history, performs a neurological examination, and discusses your concerns. If an EEG is indicated, it can often be ordered the same day. Bring your child’s records, medication list, insurance card, and a comfort item for younger children.
